7 tips to select the right company to sell for

So you are looking for a new company to sell for and call home or perhaps you are brand new in the profession of sales. Either way it is crucial to find the right company that you can grow with, believe in and enjoy a successful, rewarding career.
Why is it so critical to find the right company? Because in any sales position the first 18 months will be an enormous amount of hard work as you learn your product and build your funnel of prospects. As long as you continue to prospect each year you will be more successful than the last because you are building upon your pipeline of potential clients. If you keep jumping from company to company you are starting that excruciating 18 months of hard work over and over.
With this in mind it is necessary to put in the research, energy and time to select the right company to sell for. Here are 7 tips to help you find that company.

7 tips to select the right company to sell for

1. Start on the internet. What can you find out about the company you are considering? Go beyond the first page of google. Read articles on the company you find on the internet and explore any social media sites they may be on (Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
2. Call the Better Business Bureau to find out if the company is a member and what rating and reviews they have.
3. Check them out on LinkedIn. In tip 1 you will come across their LinkedIn page, but go way beyond reading just their LinkedIn business page. Look at the recommendations their sales people get. A lot of satisfied clients translates to a hardworking sales team. Do you know anyone on LinkedIn that is connected to the company? How long have many of the sales employees sold at said company? If there are many employees with tenure at the company this speaks volumes about a positive, successful sales team. Explore every last nugget of valuable information that LinkedIn offers on this company.
4. Research the product they sell. Would you buy it? If you are not 100 % sold on the product then move on.
5. Look at the competitor websites. Do you feel the company you are looking at outshines the competition? That is a great sign!
6. After you have nailed the interview and have been invited to join the team ask to first shadow one of their sales people for ½ of a day. This will give you tremendous insight into what your day would be like. If you are lucky enough to get to ride with this sales person then you will have a lot of time to pick his/her brain in between sales calls. Ask probing questions, listen and absorb.
7. Ask to speak with their top sales person for a few minutes. Best to do this in person. Again, ask thoughtful questions and listen. A few questions to ask: What has contributed to his/her number one status? How does he beat the competition? What is her favorite thing about this company?
Lastly never ignore your intuition. Are you excited about working for this company or do you hear warning bells going off in your head, but you cannot pinpoint why. Again, selecting the right company to sell for is critical so give the process the time it deserves.
